Starting from today, I'm aiming to do a little thing on this blog I've been thinking of doing for sometime. Basically, every Sunday I'll be updating this blog with a couple of posts, each featuring 10 games.
One will be a 'special', featuring 10 games of a particular type. For instance, I'm aiming for an F1 special in a week, featuring 10 games across the years and platforms. This will no doubt be a rambling post with a few screenies and off-tangent points.
The second will feature 10 games for a particular platform. For instance, I'm going to be putting up a feature on 10 mega drive games later on. With each, I'll be giving my random experience of the game, and giving them a rating in 7 key areas: Presentation, Graphics, Sound, Playability, Lastability, Originality and Box Art. For me, these are the key 6 areas.
Presentation will deal with a games Menus, cut scenes, options and general interface. It may not be the most important part of a game to some, but to me, that initial impression a game gives is vitally important.
Graphics and Sound are self explanatory. Let's face it, the way a game looks and sounds is integral to any game, despite what some may say of a games general play style.
Playability is a word borrowed from many of the 90's games mags I read. It deals with the way the game plays, the fun of picking it up and playing. RPG's may not score too highly, their fun comes with time, to be savoured like a fine wine. Arcade styled games however, hit you with their Vodka powered punch from the off, and score highly here.
Lastability, as you may have guessed, is how deep the game is. RPG's and deep sports sims will score highly, rewarding players with deep stories or long careers to devote portions of their lives too. Arcade classics however, may not do so quite as well.
Originality speaks for a games innovation, it's attempt to bring new styles of gaming to a platform, it's little inspired moments of joy that gamers haven't been able to experience before. A key factor in many games.
Finally box art will, as perhaps you guessed, deal with a games Box art, including cart/disc's, instructions and general look of the entire package. Like presentation, this may not be key to a games enjoyment, but it's highly important for that initial wow factor or appeal.
My idea is basically, with each group of 10 games, to 'progress' a game from each group to a next round. A bit of a compettiton between the games as it were. Eventually, this will lead to several games going through to a final for each Platform, in each of the different areas. I'll make the groups random, but will keep games from the same series of games seperate. In a few years (maybe) I may even get round to doing some finals!
I don't know if this will work, I've found my time sorely in short supply when doing blogs before, but this weekly update idea with a bit of a difference sounds good in my head.
Anyway, first 10 games, which as said will be a Mega Drive selection, will be ip later on. On with the blog!
